From sketch to form

A new piece usually starts as a sketch or a silhouette: an idea drawn from the way light moves across a wall, or the rhythm of water, or a shape found in the Australian landscape.

That sketch is developed into a 3D model, where proportion, scale and detail can be tested and refined long before anything is printed.

The design is then 3D printed as a prototype. Each version reveals something new: how the light moves through the form, how the surface catches it, how the piece sits in the hand or in a room. Adjustments are made, and it's printed again. The process repeats until the piece feels resolved from every angle.

As Estil Home has moved into lighting, this process has become more collaborative. Design thinking is paired with practical electrical knowledge to work through construction and function, alongside the finer details that turn a concept into a finished object.

Light, texture and the printed layer

Every curve, proportion and surface is considered in relation to how a piece will sit in a room, and how light will move through or around it.

The visible layers created through 3D printing are part of this character. Rather than hiding the manufacturing process, the texture becomes part of the finished design, catching the light and giving each piece a quiet sense of depth.
