Why Estil Home Chooses PETG

Every material choice tells a story.

Before we printed our first lamp, we spent years refining designs, testing materials and asking ourselves a simple question: how could we create lighting and homewares that were not only beautiful to live with, but also thoughtfully made?

For us, sustainability isn't a marketing term. It's a series of decisions made throughout a product's life, from the materials we choose and the way we manufacture, to how a piece is actually used once it's in someone's home.

After exploring a range of materials, we chose PETG. It offers the balance we were looking for: a material that stands up to daily life, prints with genuine precision, and can be recovered and reused within our own workshop.

Beyond the word "biodegradable"

PLA is one of the most widely used materials in consumer 3D printing and is often promoted as the more sustainable option, because it's made from renewable plant-based resources such as corn starch or sugarcane.

While that's true, the full picture is more nuanced.

Most PLA products require specialised industrial composting facilities, with carefully controlled heat, humidity and microbial activity, before they break down efficiently. Those conditions are very different from a home compost bin, and aren't widely available in many parts of the world.

There's also limited evidence of consistent or rapid decomposition of PLA in landfill or natural environments. In practice, PLA products can sit in landfill for a long time if they're never processed through industrial composting.

That doesn't make PLA a poor material. It simply means real-world disposal doesn't always match the expectations created by the word "biodegradable."

Why we chose PETG

PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol) is an engineering-grade thermoplastic, used in products where strength and clarity both matter.

For our homewares, that translates into something practical. It resists impact and holds its shape under everyday use: a bumped side table, a dropped cushion, a busy room. Where ceramic chips and glass cracks, PETG absorbs the knock. It also resists moisture, and lets us produce the refined textures and finishes that run through the Estil Home collection.

Sometimes the most sustainable product is simply the one that stays in use, rather than being replaced.

Reducing waste through closed-loop recycling

Sustainability doesn't end once a product leaves the printer.

To reduce waste within our own workshop, Estil Home is investing in a closed-loop filament recycling system. Clean production offcuts, prototypes and failed prints can be shredded and reprocessed into usable filament, keeping material in circulation rather than sending it to landfill.

This won't eliminate waste entirely (no manufacturing process can), but it's a genuine step towards producing more responsibly.

Our approach to thoughtful manufacturing extends beyond the material itself. Where practical, we also aim to power our design and 3D printing processes using solar energy generated at the workshop. Small-batch production, closed-loop recycling and renewable energy, used together, are how we keep working to reduce the impact of every piece we make.

Built to take everyday life

A lamp that sits on a side table gets knocked. A vase gets moved, refilled, bumped by an elbow. We wanted a material that could take that, not one that needed to be handled carefully to survive it.

PETG gives us that confidence. It's less susceptible to the everyday knocks and accidental damage that would chip a ceramic piece or crack a glass one, and it holds its appearance under normal use.

Traditional materials, a different approach

Glass and ceramics have shaped the world of lighting and homewares for centuries, and for good reason. They're beautiful materials that continue to inspire designers everywhere.

Like every material, they come with trade-offs. Producing glass and ceramics is energy-intensive, relying on extremely high firing or forming temperatures. Once damaged, they're difficult to repair, and ceramics can't be recycled through conventional household systems.

PETG offers a different path. Its weight, resilience and recyclability, combined with our made-to-order model and investment in closed-loop recycling, support what we're actually trying to do: make thoughtfully designed pieces without unnecessary waste.

Made to order, not mass produced

Traditional manufacturing often relies on producing large quantities of stock long before a customer places an order.

Our approach is different. Most Estil Home pieces are made on demand, or in carefully planned small batches. This reduces overproduction, unnecessary inventory and material waste, while giving us room to keep refining a design over time.

It's a slower, more considered way of making things: one that reflects our belief that quality should come before quantity.

Thoughtfully designed, considered at every stage

There isn't a single material or manufacturing process that can claim to be perfectly sustainable.

We believe meaningful progress comes from making better decisions at every stage of a product's life: choosing durable materials, manufacturing locally in Australia, producing only what's needed, recovering material wherever possible, and designing pieces with genuine care for how they'll actually be used.

Those decisions guide every collection we create. There's always more to learn and improve, and we're committed to continuing that with honesty, curiosity and care.
